Barney Cohen
Wrote and executive produced GUERNICA (2016, Amazon), a war romance set in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, against the backdrop of the bombing of Guernica.
For television, Cohen is in development on an hour drama at Warner Bros. based on a 2013 New York Times best-seller set in the California wine country, and is also in development on another hour drama, an original, semi-supernatural crime series based on an NYPD “urban legend” with the “Blacklist” people.
Cohen co-created the USA Networks’ series FOREVER KNIGHT which debuted as his CBS television movie and became one of the TV Guide, "25 Top Cult Shows Ever!" (70 episodes) and wrote and produced the Showtime movie SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH, which launched the even longer running sitcom of the same name, on which he served as an exec. Cohen also wrote and produced DOOM RUNNERS, Nickelodeon's first-ever television movie, and he is currently developing feature length scripts in several genres, which, like “Knight” and “Sabrina,” are designed to be movies or telemovies that launch sequel franchises and/or episodic television.
Cohen’s filmed production of the musical FOREVER PLAID played the NCM Fathom network (600 movie theatres, one night only) followed by “pledge weeks” on PBS. Three quarters of the show’s cast plus Daniel Reichard of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys” and David Hyde-Pierce were joined by Carol Channing performing live. Oscar winner (“All That Jazz)” Alan Heim edited.
Cohen's past writing/producing work also includes major television movies like NEXT DOOR (with James Woods and Randy Quaid directed by Oscar winner Tony Bill), which Variety called “an intriguing, disturbing and over-the-top black comedy,” and SAHARA, a re-make of the classic WWII film with James Belushi in the Humphrey Bogart role, which The New York Times called, "a stunning exception to the usual rule about TV re-makes." His other television movies have aired on CBS, Showtime, and ABC.
His other feature screenplays include the horror films FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER (Paramount) and KILLER PARTY (MGM), and the time-slip period piece, FRENCH QUARTER (Crown), a low budget historical fiction, which Leonard Maltin gave three stars.
Cohen’s animation credits include THUNDER CATS and HE-MAN: MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (in fact, his episode, "Evil Seed," was voted #1 by "He-Man" fans and is credited as such on the recently released "Collectors Edition" of the ten best episodes of that show).
Prior to his film and television career, Cohen was a journalist for The New York Times (among others), a career that took him around world, during which time he wrote several non-fiction books including The Proud (Morrow) about the United States Marines during Desert Storm.
